🕌 Istanbul Travel Guide
Where two continents meet
About Istanbul
Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, and the cultural fusion this implies permeates everything — the food, the architecture, the music, and the people. The skyline of Ottoman minarets and Byzantine domes is unlike anything else on earth, and the Grand Bazaar's 4,000 shops have been trading for over 550 years. What surprises visitors most is the city's sheer scale and energy: 15 million people, the Bosphorus strait dividing Europe and Asia, and a food culture that runs from Michelin-starred restaurants in Nişantaşı to the world's best simit (sesame bread rings) from a street cart.
Practical Tips
- Get an Istanbulkart from any metro station — it covers all public transport including trams, metro, ferries, and buses at a significant discount over single tickets.
- The Sultanahmet area (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi) is compact and walkable — staying here means you walk to the main sites, but the neighbourhood is very tourist-oriented; consider Karaköy or Cihangir for a more local base.
- The ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian side (Kadıköy or Üsküdar) is one of the world's great short boat journeys and costs almost nothing with an Istanbulkart.
- Turkish breakfast is a serious affair — spread of cheese, olives, tomatoes, eggs, honey, and tea — and hotel breakfasts are often excellent; Van Kahvaltı Evi in Cihangir is the gold standard.
