Santorini is one of those rare places that surpasses its photographs — the whitewashed clifftop villages of Oia and Fira perched above a turquoise volcanic caldera, the sunset light that turns everything gold and amber, the black and red volcanic beaches that feel utterly unlike anywhere in Europe. The island is the remnant of a massive volcanic eruption that destroyed the ancient Minoan city of Akrotiri around 1600 BC — that same volcano created the dramatic caldera cliffs, the dark beaches, and the mineral-rich soil that makes Santorini's Assyrtiko wine exceptional.

Practical Tips

• The famous Oia sunset draws enormous crowds — arrive 90 minutes early to claim a position, or better still, watch it from the less-crowded Imerovigli or from a sunset catamaran cruise on the caldera.
• ATVs are the most popular way to get around the island but have a genuinely poor safety record — consider a rental car instead, which is only marginally more expensive and significantly safer on the steep, narrow roads.
• Book accommodation on the caldera edge (Fira, Oia, Imerovigli) well in advance — the clifftop hotels with caldera views sell out months ahead in summer, and prices fall sharply for hotels just one street back.
• Visit Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning when it opens (8:30am) before the heat builds — it is one of the best-preserved Bronze Age settlements in the world and astonishingly undervisited compared to the island's other sights.
