🏰 Prague Travel Guide
The City of a Hundred Spires
About Prague
Prague is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities — the Gothic spires, Baroque palaces, and Art Nouveau façades survived both World Wars largely intact, leaving a city centre that looks almost exactly as it did in the 18th century. The Czech capital is also one of the most affordable major European destinations: excellent beer (Czech pilsner was invented here), substantial Czech food, and world-class accommodation at prices well below Western Europe. The Old Town Square's Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge at dawn, and Prague Castle seen from across the river are three of the most photogenic scenes in all of Europe.
Practical Tips
- Stay in the Old Town or Vinohrady — the city centre is very walkable and the metro is simple if you need it; tourist areas are best avoided after dark for inflated prices.
- The Astronomical Clock show (on the hour) draws enormous crowds — you don't need to fight for a spot; the clock itself and the surrounding square are worth seeing at any time.
- Czech currency is CZK (crown) — avoid currency exchange booths near tourist areas and use ATMs instead; credit cards are widely accepted but exchange rates at tourist booths are typically terrible.
- The Czech beer culture is extraordinary: Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, and Budvar are all brewed here; a half-litre in a local pub (hospoda) costs around 50 CZK — less than €2.
