Harbour city with world-class beaches
About Sydney
Sydney has one of the world's great natural settings — the Opera House sails and Harbour Bridge arching over a glittering blue harbour, with beaches that rival anything in the tropics less than an hour from the city centre. The city is easy to love: the food scene punches above its weight thanks to outstanding Asian influence, the outdoor culture means the beaches and coastal walks are always full of life, and the Blue Mountains are a world away but only 90 minutes by train. What surprises visitors most is how genuinely big and spread-out Sydney is — allow more time than you think to move between areas.
Practical Tips
- Load an Opal card at any train station or convenience store — it covers buses, trains, ferries, and the light rail with automatic daily and weekly caps that make it significantly cheaper than buying individual tickets.
- The Manly Ferry (30 minutes from Circular Quay) is the best way to see the harbour and is far more scenic than catching a bus — take it at least once and walk the Manly to Shelly Beach coastal path.
- Book the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb at least a few days ahead for your preferred time slot — the summit experience and guide commentary are genuinely excellent, and the view from the top of the pylons is unmatched.
- Sydney's beaches (Bondi, Manly, Coogee) have strong rip currents in places — always swim between the red and yellow flags patrolled by lifeguards; the flags exist because those sections are genuinely safer.
