⛩️ 3-Day Kyoto Itinerary
Ancient temples, geisha districts, bamboo groves
Your 3-Day Kyoto Plan
Three days in Kyoto is enough to experience the city's three great areas — the vermillion Fushimi Inari gates in the south, the Arashiyama bamboo grove in the west, and the Higashiyama temple trail in the east. Stay central near Gion for easy evening access to the lantern-lit streets.
Day 1
Fushimi Inari and Gion at Dusk
Begin at Fushimi Inari early morning — walk at least to the first major fork (30 minutes up) before the tour groups arrive. The seemingly infinite tunnel of orange torii gates is unlike anything else in Japan. Afternoon in Nishiki Market, Kyoto's narrow covered food market nicknamed the Kitchen of Kyoto. At dusk, walk Hanamikoji Street in Gion — you may spot a geisha moving between appointments.
Day 2
Arashiyama: Bamboo Grove and Temples
Take the Sagano Scenic Railway or local train to Arashiyama and walk the famous bamboo grove first thing in the morning — the sound of wind through the towering stalks is meditative. Visit Tenryu-ji's zen garden, take a rickshaw through the temple district, then hire a rowboat on the Oi River in the afternoon. The Monkey Park on Mount Arashiyama has views over the city.
Day 3
Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle
The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) surrounded by its reflection pond is best in morning light when the gold leaf really glows. Walk to Ryoan-ji's famous zen rock garden, then to Nijo Castle — the nightingale floors that chirp when walked on were a clever 17th-century security feature. Evening at the Philosopher's Path for a quiet end to your stay.
