Your 5-Day Kyoto Plan

Five days in Kyoto allows you to absorb the city's remarkable depth — Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage, the Philosopher's Path in blossom season, and the Nanzen-ji aqueduct are all experiences that deserve unhurried attention.

Day 1
Fushimi Inari and Nishiki Market
Early start at Fushimi Inari, aiming for the summit torii if time allows (2 hours up). Afternoon at Nishiki Market for food tasting. Gion evening walk.
Day 2
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Morning at the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji garden, boat on the Oi River. Arashiyama's quieter temple lanes in the afternoon.
Day 3
Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle
Golden Pavilion in morning light, Ryoan-ji zen garden, Nijo Castle with its chirping nightingale floors.
Day 4
Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji
Walk the Philosopher's Path from Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) to Nanzen-ji — a canal-side stone path lined with cherry trees. Nanzen-ji's sub-temples and the striking 19th-century aqueduct make this a half-day at least. Heian Shrine's vast vermillion torii gate is a 10-minute walk away.
Day 5
Kiyomizu-dera and Gion at Night
Climb through the Higashiyama ceramic shops to Kiyomizu-dera, the UNESCO-listed temple with its famous wooden stage cantilevered over the forested hillside. The view back across Kyoto from the veranda is outstanding. At dusk, explore the atmospheric backstreets of Gion for a final evening in the city.
