Your 7-Day Kyoto Plan

Seven days gives you the rare luxury of slowing down in Kyoto — visiting the same garden in morning light and evening glow, a day trip to the Great Buddha and deer park of Nara, and another to the food and nightlife of Osaka.

Day 1
Fushimi Inari and Nishiki Market
Early Fushimi Inari, afternoon Nishiki Market food tour. Gion evening walk.
Day 2
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Morning bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji, afternoon boat ride and Sagano district.
Day 3
Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle
Golden Pavilion, Ryoan-ji rock garden, Nijo Castle.
Day 4
Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji
Ginkaku-ji, Philosopher's Path canal walk, Nanzen-ji aqueduct, Heian Shrine.
Day 5
Kiyomizu-dera and Gion at Night
Higashiyama temple trail, Kiyomizu-dera wooden stage, evening Gion district.
Day 6
Nara Day Trip: Great Buddha and Deer
45 minutes by express train from Kyoto, Nara's tame deer roam freely around Todai-ji — home to Japan's largest bronze Buddha statue, housed in the world's largest wooden building. The deer will approach you for crackers sold at stalls near the temple. Return to Kyoto for a kaiseki dinner if budget allows.
Day 7
Osaka Day Trip: Dotonbori and Castle
30 minutes by Shinkansen or 1 hour by local train to Osaka. Start at Osaka Castle Park, then make your way to Dotonbori — Japan's most vibrant food and entertainment district, with the famous crab and puffer fish signs. Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki are mandatory. Return to Kyoto for a final dinner.
