🏔️ Queenstown Travel Guide
Adventure capital of the world
About Queenstown
Queenstown, New Zealand sits at the edge of Lake Wakatipu with the snow-capped Remarkables mountains as its backdrop — a setting so dramatic it was used as Middle-earth in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The town is famous as the adventure capital of the world: the first commercial bungee jump operated here in 1988, and the roster of adrenaline activities has only expanded since. What makes Queenstown exceptional is that the adventure is layered over extraordinary natural beauty — helicopter skiing, jet boating through narrow canyons, and skydiving over landscapes that genuinely take your breath away.
Practical Tips
- Rent a car or campervan for maximum flexibility — public transport is limited outside Queenstown town centre and the best experiences (Glenorchy Road, Arrowtown, Wanaka) require driving.
- Milford Sound is a 4-hour drive each way and the cruise is best done on a clear day — check the forecast the night before and book the earliest departure to beat afternoon clouds in the fjord.
- Adventure activities (bungee, skydiving, white water rafting) can be booked on arrival but sell out in peak summer (December to February) and peak ski season (July to August) — book 2–3 days ahead.
- The Remarkables and Coronet Peak ski fields are world-class but expensive by European standards — lift passes, rentals, and lessons add up quickly; book packages in advance for better pricing.
