Your 5-Day Queenstown Plan

Five days in Queenstown balances the unmissable adventure activities with the area's remarkable natural scenery — Milford Sound, Wanaka, and Arrowtown are all within striking distance for day trips from a Queenstown base.

Day 1
Arrival, Gondola, and Waterfront
Arrive and take the Skyline Gondola up for panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. Walk along the Queenstown waterfront in the afternoon — the lakeside gardens and jetty are beautiful in evening light. Dinner in town, where the restaurant density is remarkable for a small city.
Day 2
Milford Sound Full Day
The most important day of your trip — depart at 7am for the 4-hour drive to Milford Sound through Fiordland National Park. Join a 2-hour cruise on the fiord beneath waterfalls and sheer cliffs rising 1,200 metres. Homer Tunnel, Mirror Lakes, and The Chasm waterfall are all worth stopping for on the drive. Return to Queenstown by 9pm.
Day 3
Bungee Jumping and Arrowtown
Morning at the Kawarau Bridge Bungee — the world's first commercial site, where you can jump 43 metres into the river below or just watch others take the plunge. Afternoon at Arrowtown, a beautifully preserved 19th-century gold rush town 20 minutes from Queenstown, with excellent cafes and a small museum.
Day 4
Wanaka: Roy's Peak Hike
Drive 45 minutes to Wanaka for the Roy's Peak hike — a 3-hour climb to 1,578 metres with one of New Zealand's most photographed views: Lake Wanaka framed between golden tussock hills. The zigzag track is straightforward but steep; start early to avoid afternoon heat. Lunch at one of Wanaka's lakeside cafes.
Day 5
Gibbston Valley Wine Tasting
The Gibbston Valley — the Valley of the Vines — is 30 minutes from Queenstown and produces exceptional Pinot Noir in one of the world's southernmost wine regions. Most wineries offer cave cellar door tastings carved directly into the schist rock. Farewell dinner in Queenstown with a view of the lake at night.
