🏺 Athens Travel Guide
The cradle of Western civilization
About Athens
Athens is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and the weight of that history is genuinely palpable — the Acropolis rising above the sprawling modern city is one of travel's great views, and the Parthenon remains the defining monument of Western civilisation 2,500 years after its construction. Modern Athens is also a revelation: a vibrant food scene in Monastiraki and Koukaki, rooftop bars with Acropolis views, and neighbourhoods like Exarchia and Metaxourgeio that are genuinely artsy and local. And from Athens, the Greek islands are just a ferry ride away.
Practical Tips
- The combo ticket covers the Acropolis plus six other major ancient sites including the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos, and Temple of Olympian Zeus — much better value than individual tickets.
- Visit the Acropolis in the first hour after opening (8am) or in the last two hours before closing to avoid the worst heat and crowds — midday in summer is genuinely brutal.
- Athens is extraordinarily affordable by European standards: excellent taverna meals cost €10–15, Greek coffee (ellinikos) is €2, and the metro is cheap and efficient.
- The Athens Riviera — the coastal strip south of the city toward Vouliagmeni — has excellent beaches accessible by tram and bus, perfect for a half-day escape from sightseeing.
