Your 3-Day Athens Plan

Three days in Athens covers the Acropolis and its museums, the ancient Agora, and a day trip to Cape Sounion — the essential ancient Athens circuit plus enough time to fall for the city's contemporary character.

Day 1
The Acropolis
The Acropolis is best at 8am when it opens — the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaia, and Temple of Athena Nike are all within the fortified plateau, and the views over Athens are extraordinary in the morning light. Descend to the Acropolis Museum directly below (one of Europe's finest new museum buildings) for the afternoon — the Parthenon frieze section displayed here makes a compelling case for the return of the Elgin Marbles.
Day 2
Ancient Agora and Monastiraki
The Ancient Agora was the civic heart of ancient Athens — Socrates taught philosophy here, and the Temple of Hephaestus (among the best-preserved ancient Greek temples anywhere) overlooks the excavated civic buildings. The Stoa of Attalos reconstruction houses an excellent museum. Walk through the Monastiraki flea market and Plaka neighbourhood for afternoon coffee and shopping.
Day 3
Cape Sounion
Cape Sounion is 70km south of Athens on a peninsula jutting into the Aegean — the Temple of Poseidon perched on the clifftop at sunset is one of Greece's most dramatic and romantic ancient sites. Take the KTEL bus from Pedion Areos (2 hours), spend 2 hours at the site, and return by bus or taxi. Byron carved his name in the temple stone in 1810.
