🏺 5-Day Athens Itinerary
The cradle of Western civilization
Your 5-Day Athens Plan
Five days gives you time for the National Archaeological Museum (the world's greatest collection of ancient Greek art), a ferry day trip to Hydra island, and the slow pleasures of neighbourhood exploration.
Day 1
The Acropolis
Early Acropolis visit, Acropolis Museum in the afternoon.
Day 2
Ancient Agora and Monastiraki
Ancient Agora, Monastiraki flea market, Plaka neighbourhood.
Day 3
Cape Sounion Day Trip
Temple of Poseidon at sunset.
Day 4
National Archaeological Museum
The NAM houses the finest collection of ancient Greek art in the world — the Mask of Agamemnon, the bronze Artemision Jockey, and the Antikythera Mechanism (an ancient astronomical computer) are all here. Allow a full morning. Afternoon in Exarchia, Athens's anarchist-intellectual neighbourhood, for the best street art and most authentic cafés.
Day 5
Hydra Island Day Trip
The Flying Dolphin hydrofoil from Piraeus reaches car-free Hydra in 90 minutes — donkeys and water taxis are the only transport on the island. The stone-built harbour town and the surrounding coastline (accessible by water taxi to swimming coves) make it the most beautiful day trip from Athens.
