Your 5-day Santorini itinerary, day by day
- Day1
Fira, Caldera Walk, Imerovigli
Caldera path walk, Fira town exploration, sunset from Imerovigli. Dinner on the caldera edge.
- Day2
Oia Blue Domes at Sunrise
Arrive in Oia at sunrise for the least crowded experience of the blue domes. Morning photography walk, then galleries and a long lunch at a clifftop restaurant.
- Day3
Akrotiri and Red Beach
Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning, Red Beach and Black Beach in the afternoon. Pyrgos village for wine tasting at sunset.
- Day4
Catamaran Sunset Cruise
A half-day catamaran cruise around the caldera is one of the great Santorini experiences — swim in the volcanic hot springs near the Nea Kameni volcano island, snorkel in clear water, and watch the sunset from the water with a glass of local wine. Book ahead.
- Day5
Ancient Thira and Perissa Beach
Hike up to the Ancient Thira ruins on Mesa Vouno mountain — the hilltop Hellenistic city with views over both sides of the island. Descend to Perissa for lunch on the black sand beach — less crowded than the north and the volcanic sand is unique. Farewell dinner in Fira.
Tips for your Santorini trip
- The famous Oia sunset draws enormous crowds — arrive 90 minutes early to claim a position, or better still, watch it from the less-crowded Imerovigli or from a sunset catamaran cruise on the caldera.
- ATVs are the most popular way to get around the island but have a genuinely poor safety record — consider a rental car instead, which is only marginally more expensive and significantly safer on the steep, narrow roads.
- Book accommodation on the caldera edge (Fira, Oia, Imerovigli) well in advance — the clifftop hotels with caldera views sell out months ahead in summer, and prices fall sharply for hotels just one street back.
- Visit Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning when it opens (8:30am) before the heat builds — it is one of the best-preserved Bronze Age settlements in the world and astonishingly undervisited compared to the island's other sights.
