Coffee houses, Klimt, and classical music
Your 5-Day Vienna Plan
Five days lets you add the Kunsthistorisches Museum (one of the world's great art collections), the Naschmarkt, and the wine villages of the Vienna Woods — the full imperial and local experience.
Day 1
Hofburg and Inner City
Hofburg Palace complex, Ring Boulevard, Vienna State Opera standing room tickets.
Day 2
Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace and gardens, Gloriette viewpoint, Prater and Riesenrad.
Day 3
Belvedere and Klimt
Upper Belvedere, Klimt's The Kiss, Naschmarkt lunch.
Day 4
Kunsthistorisches Museum
The KHM is one of the world's great art museums — Vermeer, Raphael, Velázquez, Rubens, and the world's largest Bruegel collection. Allow a full morning. Afternoon on the Ringstrasse: Parliament, Rathaus, Burgtheater. Evening concert at one of the palace halls — Vienna is full of high-quality chamber music concerts year-round.
Day 5
Vienna Woods and Heuriger
Take tram D to the end of the line and walk into the Kahlenberg hills above the city — the views of Vienna from the top are extraordinary. Come down through the wine village of Grinzing or Gumpoldskirchen for a Heuriger wine tavern lunch: new white wine, cold buffet food, and a garden. This is how Viennese locals spend a Sunday, and it's one of the city's most pleasant experiences.
