A week in Barcelona means you can be genuinely unhurried — a day trip to the mountain monastery of Montserrat, time for a Camp Nou visit, and evenings exploring the bar scene in Poblenou and Sant Antoni. Barcelona rewards the traveller who wanders.
Day 1
Sagrada Família
Full morning dedicated to Sagrada Família with tower access. Afternoon in the Eixample exploring the Modernista buildings.
Day 2
Park Güell and Gràcia
Park Güell early, then the Gràcia neighbourhood's squares and markets. Casa Vicens (Gaudí's first house, less visited than his other works) is also in Gràcia.
Day 3
Gothic Quarter and El Born
Barcelona Cathedral, Roman ruins, Santa Maria del Mar, Palau de la Música. Best lunch options in El Born.
Day 4
Barceloneta and Poblenou
La Boqueria, Barceloneta beach, then Poblenou (@22 district) in the evening for Barcelona's coolest bar and restaurant scene in a reinvented industrial setting.
Day 5
Montjuïc
Cable car to Montjuïc, MNAC, Fundació Joan Miró, the 1929 Pavelló Mies van der Rohe, and the Olympic Stadium area. Great views of the whole city.
Day 6
Montserrat Day Trip
The rack railway up to Montserrat mountain monastery is one of Catalonia's great experiences — the views are vertiginous, the monks' choir sings at 1pm, and the hiking trails above the monastery are excellent. 90 minutes from Barcelona by train and rack railway.
Day 7
Camp Nou and Farewell
Camp Nou tour in the morning — even non-football fans find the scale and history of the world's largest club stadium impressive. Afternoon in Sant Antoni, Barcelona's most pleasant neighbourhood for coffee and browsing, and a farewell dinner in the Esquerra de l'Eixample ('Gayxample') area.
