🏛️ 7-Day Rome Itinerary
The Eternal City
Your 7-Day Rome Plan
A week in Rome means you can be genuinely unhurried — long lunches, afternoon rests in the Italian style, and the pleasure of revisiting places twice. You'll also have time for a day trip to Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient port city, which rivals Pompeii but sees a fraction of the visitors.
Day 1
Colosseum and Ancient Rome
Early arrival at the Colosseum before the crowds — the underground hypogeum (where gladiators and animals waited) requires a premium ticket but is extraordinary. Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the afternoon, dinner in Testaccio.
Day 2
Vatican Museums
Full morning in the Vatican Museums, ending in the Sistine Chapel. St Peter's Basilica and dome climb in the afternoon. Walk back along the Tiber for the golden-hour view of Castel Sant'Angelo.
Day 3
Pantheon, Ghetto and Navona
Morning at the Pantheon, coffee at Sant'Eustachio, lunch in the Jewish Ghetto (try carciofi alla giudia — Jewish-style fried artichokes). Afternoon at Piazza Navona and the surrounding Baroque churches.
Day 4
Borghese Gallery
Borghese Gallery in the morning (mandatory pre-booking, 2-hour visit). Villa Borghese park in the afternoon — rent a rowboat on the lake or just find a bench. Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain in the evening (quieter after 9pm).
Day 5
Trastevere and Gianicolo
Slow morning in Trastevere: Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica, coffee at Bar San Calisto, wander the lanes. Gianicolo Hill for the noon cannon and panoramic views. Afternoon in Pigneto, Rome's coolest neighbourhood.
Day 6
Ostia Antica Day Trip
Take the 30-minute train from Piramide station to Ostia Antica — Rome's ancient port city, preserved better than Pompeii in many ways and almost always uncrowded. The mosaic floors, amphitheatre, and baths are remarkable. Return to Rome for a final dinner in the Prati neighbourhood near the Vatican.
Day 7
Appian Way and Catacombs
The Via Appia Antica on a Sunday (when it's closed to traffic) is one of Rome's great walks — ancient cobblestones, umbrella pines, and crumbling tombs stretching into the distance. Visit the Catacombs of San Callisto or San Sebastiano for a genuinely eerie underground experience. Final evening at a rooftop bar overlooking the Roman skyline.
